Destin & Holiday Isle

Public adjuster in DestinHurricane Isaias claims

Isaias made landfall at Destin, a city built around Gulf-front condo towers on Holiday Isle and Scenic Gulf Drive, harborfront marinas and restaurants, vacation-rental homes and gated golf communities. Much of that property is run by condo boards, HOAs and rental managers who need a claim handled correctly the first time. We work with associations, property managers and owners to document Isaias damage and push the claim to a full, fair number.

Hurricane Isaias in Destin

Isaias came ashore near Destin on the night of Oct. 9 as a Category 2 with 105 mph winds. Nearly the whole city lost power, surge overtopped fences and beach walkways, a boat house collapsed, Sibert Avenue flooded and winds blew open a warehouse wall; Mayor Bobby Wagner said the city's priorities were power, water and transportation.

The first offer after a storm like this is often the lowest one. Before you accept a repair-only estimate or a denial, have someone who works for you, not the carrier, read the policy and walk the property.

Destin has been here before

  1. 1975 · Hurricane Eloise

Eloise came ashore in Okaloosa County as a major hurricane and pushed a storm tide as high as 10.6 feet in Destin.

  2. 1995 · Hurricane Opal

Opal's 10 to 15 foot surge destroyed most Gulf-facing homes from Navarre Beach to east of Destin and wiped out U.S. 98 between Destin and Fort Walton Beach.

  3. 2005 · Hurricane Dennis

Dennis brought a 4.6 foot storm tide to Destin and major beach erosion from Pensacola Beach to points east of Destin.

What we’re watching on Destin claims

  • Condo towers and post-Surfside inspections

Destin's high-rise condos fall under Florida's milestone inspection law and structural integrity reserve studies for buildings three habitable stories or taller. Insurers often lean on those reports to call storm damage pre-existing, so associations need a clear before-and-after record of roofs, balconies, windows and waterproofing.

  • Docks, boathouses and seawalls

Harbor and bayou properties lost docks, lifts and at least one boathouse to Isaias. Many residential policies limit or exclude these structures while commercial and association policies may list them, so the policy language decides the strategy.

  • Lost income for harbor and beach businesses

Restaurants, charters and rental managers lost income through the evacuation, outages and cleanup. Commercial policies with business income or civil authority coverage can pay for that time, but they depend on prompt notice and solid financial records.

Destin claim questions

We're a Destin condo board. What should we do first after Isaias?

Report the claim to the association's carrier, document every roof, balcony, window and common-area loss before temporary repairs, and pull your latest milestone inspection or structural integrity reserve study so pre-existing conditions are clear. Unit owners should know Florida gives loss assessment claims until the later of 1 year after the loss or 90 days after the board votes to levy an assessment, with a 3-year outer limit.

Do I need a permit to fix my fence or dock in Destin?

Usually, yes. Destin's Building Division requires permits for repairs to fences, docks, piers and seawalls, and it takes applications online. Call the Building Division at (850) 654-1119, option 2, before you start to ask about any storm-repair relief. Either way, photograph the damage first and keep every receipt, because the claim needs them.

Our Destin vacation rental lost October bookings. Can we claim the lost rent?

Many homeowners and dwelling policies include fair rental value coverage for rent lost while a covered loss makes the property unrentable, and commercial policies use business income coverage. Keep booking records, cancellation notices and the repair timeline, because those prove the loss.
